How to Propagate Jade Plant

Jade plants are easy to propagate, and there are a few different methods you can use. Here are the steps for two common methods:

Stem cuttings

  1. Choose a healthy stem on your jade plant and use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to make a clean cut.
  1. Allow the cutting to dry for a day or two, until the cut end forms a callus.
  1. Plant the cutting in well-draining soil, burying the cut end about an inch deep.
  1. Water the cutting sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  1. Keep the cutting in a warm, bright spot, but out of direct sunlight.
  1. After a few weeks, the cutting should start to grow roots and new leaves.

Leaf cuttings

  1. Choose a healthy, mature leaf from your jade plant and gently twist it off the stem.
  1. Allow the leaf to dry for a day or two, until the cut end forms a callus.
  1. Plant the leaf in well-draining soil, burying the cut end about an inch deep.
  1. Water the soil sparingly, allowing it to dry out slightly between waterings.
  1. Keep the leaf in a warm, bright spot, but out of direct sunlight.
  1. After a few weeks, you should start to see small plantlets growing from the base of the leaf.

Jade plants can also be propagated by division, but this method is best done in spring when the plant is actively growing. Simply gently pull the plant apart at the root system, making sure each division has a healthy stem and roots, and replant each division in well-draining soil.
