Questions about propagating succulent stem cuttings? We’d love to answer them. Here are a few brief responses to some of the most common inquiries.

Frequently Asked Questions About Propagating Succulents

Can I propagate leaf cuttings?

Though this is more challenging than propagating from stem cuttings, some succulent leaves will grow roots when properly cared for. Choose thick, healthy leaves near the base of the plant. Remove them, let them dry in the shade for five to seven days, then plant them upright in a light, gritty soil. Water two to four times weekly and watch for signs of rooting.

Can I plant stem cuttings outside?

This is much harder than propagating indoors, simply because environmental conditions are so variable. If you decide to try it, pick a location that gets partial or indirect sunlight.

Do I need fertilizer to propagate stem cuttings?

It’s not needed, and in fact it can burn young unrooted succulents.

What about rooting hormones?

Again, it’s not necessary. Succulents do not need additional hormones to re-root.
