Characteristics

Aeonium ‘Jack Catlin’ is a hybrid Aeonium known for its striking rosettes and vibrant colors. It is a cultivated variety created for its ornamental appeal and robust growth.

  • Appearance: This succulent forms dense rosettes of fleshy leaves at the end of branching, woody stems. The plant has a somewhat shrubby habit due to its branching nature.
  • Color: The leaves are a vibrant mix of green and deep red or burgundy. The red coloration is more pronounced on the outer parts of the rosettes and intensifies with sunlight exposure.
  • Size: The rosettes are typically medium to large, often reaching 6 to 8 inches in diameter. The plant’s overall height and spread can be quite substantial, especially when well-cared for.
  • Flowers: Like many Aeoniums, ‘Jack Catlin’ produces flower spikes with small, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are usually yellow, providing a bright contrast to the dark foliage.

Cultivation and Propagation

Aeonium ‘Jack Catlin’ requires care similar to other Aeonium hybrids, with some specific needs due to its hybrid nature.

  • Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Adequate sunlight is essential for maintaining the vibrant coloration of the leaves.
  • Soil: Does best in well-draining soil, typically a cactus or succulent mix.
  • Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid over-watering, which can lead to root rot.
  • Temperature: Prefers mild temperatures and should be protected from frost. In colder climates, consider growing it in a container that can be moved indoors during winter.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated through stem cuttings or offsets. Cut a healthy stem, let it dry and callous for a few days, then plant in well-draining soil.

Aeonium ‘Jack Catlin’ is known for its distinctive color and form, making it a popular choice for succulent gardens, decorative pots, and as an accent in mixed plantings.
